About this work
Satirical print featuring John Bull (England) and Emperor Napoleon III at an American stall where no cotton is available, but the new American warships the Merrimac and the Monitor are. A man of African origin, formerly enslaved, looks around the corner of the stall. Following the role of these ships during the Battle of Hampton Roads on 9 March 1862 during the American Civil War. Plate published in the weekly De Nederlandsche Spectator, no. 18, 3 May 1862.
