About this work

Empty medallion flanked by the muses of tragedy and comedy, Melpomene and Thalia respectively. Melpomene holds a dagger in her hands, and a crown with scepter lies on her lap. Thalia holds a fool's stick, and a laughing mask lies at her feet. In the background, a woman with a lyre under her arm points to the stage where Minerva drives away two devilish figures. In the clouds, an angel is crowned by a putto.
