About this work

Monument commemorating the folly of the year 1720. On a large wagon drawn by a jester, Fortune scatters shares of the South Sea and Mississippi companies. The wagon is pulled by personifications of the companies, recognizable by inscriptions. Fame leads the wagon towards the almshouse and madhouse. Merchants and victims surround the wagon. In the background on the right, the Quincampoix coffee house. At the bottom, the emblem with the motto "Schijn Bedriegt" in Latin. The caption explains the representation in French and Dutch.
