About this work

Monument commemorating the folly of the year 1720. On a large wagon driven by a jester, Fortune scatters shares of the Actien. The wagon is pulled by personifications of the South Sea and Mississippi Companies, among others. The wagon is led by Fame towards the almshouse and madhouse. Around the wagon are traders and victims. On the right background, the Quincampoix coffee house. At the bottom, the emblem with the motto "Schijn Bedriegt" in Latin. The caption contains an explanation of the scene in French and Dutch. Print 18 in the series Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid with satirical prints on the Wind Trade or Share Trade of 1720.
