About this work

Monument commemorating the folly of the year 1720. On a large wagon driven by a jester, Fortune scatters shares of the South Sea and Mississippi companies. The cart is pulled by personifications of the companies, among others. The wagon is led by Fame towards the almshouse and madhouse. Around the cart are merchants and victims. In the right background, the Quincampoix coffee house. At the bottom, the emblem with the motto "Schijn Bedriegt" in Latin. Below, the explanation of the scene in French and Dutch.
