About this work
Album with leather binding and gold stamping, containing watercolors and drawings of travel scenes in Southern Italy, Sicily, and Malta. On January 26, 1778, Willem Carel Dierkens and Willem Hendrik van Nieuwerkerke left The Hague for a trip to Southern Italy, Sicily, and Malta. Later, Nicolaas ten Hove, Nathaniel Thornbury, and the Swiss artist Louis Ducros joined them. Ducros recorded the sights along the way, which Ten Hove mounted at home after the trip into three albums. This third album contains drawings of landscapes, city views, ancient monuments, and scenes from daily life on the way.
