Antique funeral scene in a mausoleum

Compositions depicting history scenes posed the greatest challenge for Neoclassical artists. The fierce competition among them meant that they continually had to find and depict original, lesser-known themes. It is not known which story is depicted here. A dead woman is being carried to a sarcophagus. The composition is well-conceived with the men displaying their brawn and the women their great sorrow.
