About this work
In the early 19th century, the mayor of Bruges, Van Huerne, had the Historia Naturalis rebound. The drawings were pasted onto pages provided with framing lines along with the name of each creature inscribed in the Dutch, Latin and French forms of the time. Additionally, he commissioned artists to enhance the drawings by adding surrounding details and backgrounds. As a result, the portrayal of the hare in mid-jump creates the illusion that it is floating above the grass.
