About this work

In the early 19th century, the mayor of Bruges, Van Huerne, had the Historia Naturalis rebound. The drawings were pasted onto pages provided with frames containing the Dutch, Latin, and French names of each creature. Additionally, he commissioned artists to enhance the drawings by adding surrounding details and backgrounds. This hedgehog and dormouse have been frequenting a dune landscape ever since.
