About this work
The river near this Dutch town is frozen, and the inhabitants amuse themselves on the ice. Because the river runs diagonally through the image, there is extreme depth in this winter landscape. From the fashionably dressed curling players in the foreground, the viewer's eye moves via the skating figures to the horizon. With light blue and white accents, Aert van der Neer created the illusion of crackling frost.
