About this work
The Prodigal Son. The story of the Prodigal Son depicted in four scenes on one painting. On the left, the son takes leave of his father; behind him, he drinks with a woman at a table outside an inn. To the right, the son is seen as a swineherd, and on the far right, the son's return, his welcome by the father, and the slaughter of the fattened calf. The canvas is part of a series of parables painted for the Lutheran church in Leiden (see also nos. SK-A-2959 and SK-A-2960).
