About this work

A woman behind a fish stall shows us a beautiful fresh fish. The light falls directly on her face and hands. The woman looks out of the painting and speaks directly to the viewer. The bond between viewer and fishwoman is further strengthened by the composition: by the cropping of the market stall, the viewer seems to be standing inside the stall.
