Portrait of Lieutenant-General Godard van Reede, Lord of Amerongen

Godard Frederik van Reede-Ginckel, cavalry general by Adriaen van der Werff. Van Reede (1644-1703) began his career as a cavalry officer in the army of the Republic. In 1688 he accompanied Prince William III to England, where the latter acceded to the throne. In 1690, when William III returned to the Republic, Van Reede was appointed to command the Anglo-Dutch army in Ireland. Van Reede's capture of Limerick (1691) brought the war in Ireland to a close. Van Reede is portrayed in armour. In his hand is his staff of office. Around his neck is the cross of the German order. He is also wearing a wig.
