Ratification of the Peace of Münster between Spain and the Dutch Republic in the Town Hall of Münster, 15 May 1648

Gerard ter Borch was present on 15 May 1648 in the town hall of Münster at the ratification of the peace treaty between the Netherlands and Spain. Left: the Dutch delegation. Right: the Spanish envoys. The Catholic Spaniards swore with the right hand on the cross and the Bible. The Protestant Dutch raised their index and middle fingers. On the table: the boxes with the peace treaties for both parties.
