About this work
Textile magnate Philips de Flines was a true connoisseur of art. He furnished his premises on the Herengracht with a special art room, decorated by Gerard de Lairesse. The artist created five black and white paintings - 'grisailles' - depicting positive qualities of De Flines. Promoting the sciences, for example, was one of the good qualities of a nobleman.
