About this work
Portrait of a man, presumably Willem Cornelisz. van Velden (1603-63), half-length, standing with gloves in his right hand. Van Velden was the former servant of Hugo de Groot. He was sworn in as a notary in 1625 and appointed advocate in 1642. In 1625 he married Elsje van Houwelingen (see pendant, SK-A-584), the maid of Maria van Reigersberch and Hugo de Groot, who had played an important role in De Groot's escape from Loevestein in 1621.
