About this work
As the artist wrote in a letter from early 1824 to Navez, he had painted two versions of the composition: "Mr. Mari, being here, took a painting I had made for a Bavarian (whom Mr. David knows very well, since he painted a portrait of him), Count Schönbrunn. He took it, I say, for the Prince d'Aremberg: it is a dying brigand and his wife lamenting. People found there was enough expression, but I have returned to redo this subject and regret that it is not this..."
