About this work

According to Carl Burckhardt's letters, the Italian model for the Amor figure was named Battista. The sculpture was created during Burckhardt's stay in Rome and was therefore also called "Roman Head" by the artist. It is part of the unfinished life-size sculptural group "Zeus and Eros," in which Eros, in an adoring posture facing the seated Zeus, kneels before him.
