About this work

Belonging to Inv. 40 (Emperor Justinian) and Inv. 1345 (Virgil), whereby Inv. 40 came to the Kunstmuseum Basel from another source. A fourth picture of the same series, depicting Cicero, was in the Viennese art trade in 1922, later in the collection of Edwin H. Fricke, Calistoga, CA, and was auctioned from this collection at Parke-Bernet in New York on 22.3.1945 (note in the painting file). Whether further pictures belonged to this series and whether there was a model for the portraits is not known.
