About this work
From 1909 onwards, Marius Borgeaud repeatedly stayed in Rochefort-en-Terre, Morbihan, in Brittany, and painted many scenes of village life there. He became famous for scenes in the pharmacy and, as here, in the mairie – the town hall. The catalogue raisonné groups together the works set in the same room (Wyder 1999, cat. 101–110); this includes the very similar work "Le Mariage breton" (1913, Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne, Inv. 1973-02, see Wyder 1999, cat. 103).
