About this work
The famous Basel medical professor (1536–1614) is depicted almost life-size as a full-length figure, in a type usually reserved for portraits of princes. His black clothing corresponds to the Spanish court fashion current at the time (see Exhibition Catalogue Nuremberg 2011). A multitude of attributes points to his comprehensive humanistic education and his achievements as a scholar.
