About this work

The escutcheons of the Cistercian monastery of St. Urban (Lucerne) and of the founder, its abbot Sebastian Seemann (reg. 1534–1551), are flanked by the order's saint Bernard of Clairvaux and the holy pope Urban. Above the arch is the Adoration of the Kings. The abbot, so important for the post-Reformation history of the monastery, was granted episcopal rights by Pope Paul III in 1537.
