About this work

The figure pane was part of a larger cycle that had the adventurous life of the Basel goldsmith, alchemist, physician, and versatile entrepreneur Leonhard Thurneysser as its subject (cf. Boerlin 1976 in detail). He himself was the commissioner; the destination was probably a representative room in his house on Kohlenberg. According to the coat of arms and inscription in the apex of the arch, he could win Pope Gregory XIII as a donor. The central panel shows the birth of Thurneysser, whose eventful...
