About this work
The figure pane was part of a larger cycle that had the adventurous life of the Basel goldsmith, alchemist, physician, and versatile entrepreneur Leonhard Thurneysser as its subject (cf. Boerlin 1976 in detail). He himself was the commissioner; the destination was probably a representative room in his house on Kohlenberg. According to the coat of arms and inscription in the apex of the arch, he could win Archbishop Gebhard of Cologne as a donor. The central panel unites several scenes: The encounter with...
