About this work
Hawaii's Kilauea's eruption, which began three weeks ago, has produced new lava flows that reached the ocean. The combination of molten lava and sea water produced clouds of noxious gases, such as hydrogen sulfide. In this image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) radiometer instrument on NASA's Terra satellite, vegetation is displayed in red, clouds are white and the hot lava flows, detected by ASTER's thermal infrared channels, are overlaid in yellow.
