About this work
The Imperial Chrysanthemum crest indicates that this box was a gift from the Emperor. Again, Jitoku has used the rich, grainy gold ground to give the box a special aura. The gentian flowers, in sprinkled silver powder and mother-of-pearl inlay, seem to light up in the summer sun.
