About this work

The people plunder the house of Mr. Jacob van Zuylen van Nyevelt, bailiff of Rotterdam, on 5 October 1690. Van Zuylen van Nyevelt (1642-1695) was appointed bailiff of Rotterdam in 1676 through the patronage of stadtholder William III. He quickly enriched himself through corruption. When he had unlawfully had a midshipman of the civic guard executed, pent-up hatred against him erupted.
