About this work

Baluster-shaped lidded jar of porcelain, painted in underglaze blue and on the glaze red, black and gold. On the belly three large cartouches with a shishi between a blooming peony plant; the cartouches are separated by bands of scrollwork with therein a lobed cartouche with a hoo-bird surrounded by floral scrolls. On the shoulder a broad band with chrysanthemum scrolls interrupted by lobed cartouches with a shishi (lion-dog) between a plant. Around the foot and on the neck a band with lotus scrolls. On the foot a band with scrollwork. Part of a cabinet set. Imari.
