Surrender of Ghent, 1709

Capture of Ghent by the Allies; the city surrendered on 30 December 1708, with a final agreement reached on 12 January 1709. The central representation of the offering of the city keys framed in a richly decorated ornamental border with, at the top, a cartouche containing a plan of the city. Accompanied by an eagle with a shield bearing the monogram CR (Carolus Rex) of Charles III. Bottom, a cartouche with a description of the events in German, river gods on the right, the city maiden with the Flemish (or Brabantine?) Lion on the left.
