Strip of needle lace with iris on an S-shaped stem with a knot

Strip of natural-colored needle lace: Burano lace. The repeating and continuous pattern consists of linked S-shaped stems with a diagonally hanging iris, intersected by a stem with many smaller rosette flowers. In the S-shaped stem, a knot appears to be present in each wave crest, from which a double stem subsequently emerges. In the field next to each iris and between the wave crests, an acanthus leaf. The motifs are built up from festoon stitches, with or without cutouts. They are accentuated by relief contours, consisting of the loose sewn-on thread bundles characteristic of Burano lace. The motifs are connected by a fine mesh ground with wrapped meshes made in crosswise-oriented loops, a Burano ground. Various decorative stitches have been applied and coarse bar grounds with picots as decorative ground. The upper side of the strip is finished straight with a knotted band. The irregular scalloped edge results from the pattern and is finished with picots.
