Needle lace strip with rose above a lying C-scroll

Strip of natural-coloured needle lace: Alençon lace. The repeating pattern consists of a horizontal C-scroll with a rose in the middle of the field above it. The rose hangs from a branch that springs from the left next to the C-scroll and curves. Another branch that also springs from the left next to the scroll shoots diagonally over the preceding C-scroll and curves almost at the top of the strip over the rose in that field. The scalloped border consists alternately of five leaves that hang down under each scroll and a rose that hangs between the scrolls. The motifs are built up from festoon stitches and are provided with relief contours. The motifs are connected to each other by a fine mesh ground, an Alençon ground sown with picots. In the flower hearts and in the five small circles that lie on the C-scrolls ornamental stitches are applied. The upper side is finished straight with a bobbin-edged band. The scalloped border is finished with picots.
