About this work

Oriental carpet, runner format, of knotted wool. Central field: on a dark blue ground, broken zigzag bands form nine and a half diamonds. The ground shows a very finely scattered pattern of small lotuses and palmettes, rosette flowers, and birds facing alternately inward and outward in white, red, pink, light blue, and yellow. Three borders: the middle and widest is red with lotus flowers in pink, lilac, and blue, connected by a broken garland of green. The inner and outer borders are identical: narrow white with a running vine bearing alternately inward- and outward-facing cup-shaped flowers. At one end, approximately 35 cm of the ground is light blue in color. Here and there the pile is worn down to the knot; otherwise, the carpet is in fairly good condition.
