About this work

The left darning sample is marked with the letters EG; possibly the initials of the teacher. A darning sampler in silk intended for restoring kilim carpets. The top edge is embroidered with a series of shells in the festoon and chain stitch. Marked: GHA, the maker; LA, her father; FGVW, her mother. The girl probably resided in the Roman Catholic Orphanage, the Maagdenhuis at the Spui.
