Napkin with the history of John the Baptist

Linen damask napkin with the history of John the Baptist. Central field: the symmetrically doubled pattern shows from bottom to top three scenes: 1 Beheading of John (halved). In front of a projecting wall with lattice windows stands the executioner in Roman uniform, holding a sword in one hand and the severed head in the other, which he offers to Salome, who holds up a platter. Salome wears a long gown and a fluttering shawl around her head. John's body lies on his back on the ground, a stream of blood gushing from his neck. 2 Salome carries the head into the dining hall. On a tiled floor, seated on the side, are Herod on a throne, and Herodias, with her head turned toward Herod, behind a table; inscription: MARCI.VI. 3 John preaching in the wilderness. John with a halo stands on a hill between two trees. He wears a short camel-hair garment, is barefoot and gestures with outstretched hands. In the foreground a woman is breastfeeding her child; a little dog jumps toward her.
