About this work

Tablecloth of linen damask with Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria. Central field: narrow pattern, symmetrically repeated, of two scenes: 1 A crowned alliance coat of arms of Bourbon and Navarra, surrounded by two order chains, the inner one of St. Michel, the outer one of St. Esprit, next to an acanthus volute. Below, a broad, oval wreath of laurel branches with inscription: LUDOVICUS XIIII ET MARIA TERESIA AUSTRIACA. 2 Two standing figures, Louis XIV, dressed in a justaucorps, rhingrav, faveurs on low shoes, ruff collar, royal mantle with lilies and a long wig, extends his hand to Maria Theresa, who wears her hair à la Sévigné, wide décolleté with faveurs on the shoulders, a lifted overskirt. Above them a king and a queen (?) half-length, he with scepter and she with a large carnation in her hand. A dove with a laurel branch in its beak holds two laurel wreaths above them.
