Folding fan with leaf of paper on which 'The Judgment of Paris' is painted in gouache, on a frame of mother-of-pearl pierced and relief-carved with 'métal en quatre couleur'. In particular finely painted, the central field shows the king's son and shepherd Paris pointing out the goddess Aphrodite as the winner of the beauty contest that was fought between her and the goddesses Athena and Hera. Hera with the peacock and Athena with helmet and shield look on from a cloud in the distance. The story of 'The Judgment of Paris' that was recorded in the 1st century AD by Lucianus of Samosata (ca. 120-180 AD) was published many times in Dutch translations during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. In Van Mander (1548-1606), Krul (1601/2-1646) and Poot (1689-1733) it received a moralizing tone and Paris was a dissolute young man who preferred the sensual pleasures (Aphrodite) over wisdom (Athena) and power (Hera).
