About this work

Folding fan with leaf of thin leather on which in watercolor a couple in classical dress is led by Hymen to a wedding altar. The group is surrounded by musical and offering putti and a man and woman turning towards each other, with a laurel branch and a cornucopia with fruit. They probably symbolize prosperity and fertility that accompany the married couple. The classicistic element is emphasized by the temple on the left, the garden vase on the wall on the right and the vases above the medallions on both sides. In these medallions love symbols. On the back of the leaf a branch with flowers. In the frame center on the mount is perhaps a marriage proposal depicted. The outer legs are in the sign of country life. [See Du Mortier, 1992] The mount counts 14 not connected legs of ivory with 'métal en quatre couleurs'. The outer legs are openwork so that pink or blue foil is visible. The closing pin is of strass.
