About this work

Secretary made of oak and pine veneered with mahogany. At the corners on the front, two free-standing columns are placed on bases. The base and the capital, which carries a painted sphere, are of gilded bronze, as is the hardware under and on the doors and the writing surface; that of the upper drawer in the projecting frieze, supported by the columns, depicts Mercury in a chariot drawn by a horse in the clouds. Behind the writing surface are mirrors and shelves. Grey-veined marble top.
