About this work
This extraordinary longcase clock is made of various metals and tortoiseshell in the style of the French furniture-maker Boulle. It houses an intricate clockwork that can play fourteen melodies. On top of the clock are two figures of black figures. They are depicted in a stereotypical way with a skirt made of tobacco leaves and gold bands around their necks and wrists, references to plantations and slavery.
