About this work

Petticoat strip of black bobbin lace, Chantilly lace. The strip is intended or used for under a skirt, the two short sides are sewn together. The repeating pattern consists around the center line of the strip of an oval cartouche, crowned by two roses and some leaf branches. Hanging at the bottom of the cartouche are three long feather-shaped leaves. The underside of these leaves form part of the shell border. The successive oval cartouches are connected to each other by a broad V-shaped decorative band. In the field sown with square knots above hangs a bouquet of roses whose side branches touch the roses above the cartouche and thus provide the top of the pattern with a rose garland. Below the decorative band hang three garlands between the cartouches. From top to bottom: three large roses with leaves in between; a string of simple rosette flowers; a string of five heart-shaped motifs with fan motifs hanging underneath.
