About this work
Prayer rug, MELAS. Central field: narrow orange-red mihrab in a pinched gable and a flowering stem in white, brown, soft yellow, light blue, and aubergine. On white spandrels merging above the gable top are rows of diagonally placed carnations or plane tree leaves. Borders: double. On a very wide gold-ochre inner border are diamond-shaped and four-part flowers, one in aubergine, the other in light and dark red, white, and light green. There is one outer selvedge in aubergine with climbing carnations directed left and right. Central field and outer selvedge surrounded by interlocking triangular frames.
