About this work

Parasols with a black lace canopy over a white silk ground had been in fashion since 1850 and were therefore nothing new in the 1890s. Yet the maker of this parasol added an innovative element by decorating the inside of the canopy. When the opened parasol is carried over the shoulder, a border of black flowers surrounds the face.
