About this work

Folding fan, silk leaf painted with gouache and decorated with straw, feathers, mother-of-pearl, and metal sequins: central cartouche with a bird on a flower vase and two smaller ovals with the balloon flights of respectively the Montgolfier brothers and Jean-Pierre Blanchard '(éventail) au ballon', on a mount of à-jour cut and inlaid with silver bone. The central rectangle is represented as a miniature with a frame of gold-colored sequins and a painted ribbon. Inside is a vase of painted mother-of-pearl with straw flowers and a bird with real feathers. On the open mount the motif of the vase with flowers is repeated in the central medallion and on the support part of the outer legs. Closing pin of cut glass (strass) in silver setting. For the decoration here not only sequins and paintings were used, as with most fans au ballon, but also other, somewhat unusual materials.
