Armchair, Empire model, with rush back and seat, painted red and gilded and raised.

Two armchairs (A and B) of a tropical wood species (teak?), painted red, parts gilded and heightened with gold, the back and the loose seat frame covered with cane. Empire model with a straight, slightly curved-back, widening seat with curved sides, baluster-shaped front legs and arm supports, curved arms ending in balls, and solid cheeks with recessed panels, which are repeated in mirror image and smaller size under the seat rail. Carved with gilded acanthus and palmette motifs. Differences in proportions and detailing. On both labels: 'This chair once stood in the Castle of Batavia. Later it was used by the High Court of the Dutch East Indies Wagener'.
