About this work

Folding fan with a leaf of batiste decorated with copper spangles and inserts of coarse tulle, painted in gouache with a representation of a nymph and two putti, on a mount of ivory carved with irises and painted. The leaf is symmetrically constructed with, on the left and right, an oak-leaf-shaped garland of inlaid coarse tulle edged with copper spangles, within which centrally is an oval representation of a nymph with flowers in her curly hair sitting in a flower meadow, flanked by a putto holding two arrows on the left and flowers on the right. This scene is placed between painted irises decorated with copper spangles. The leaf is edged with a strip of machine-made lace. The mount is carved with a stacked ornament of oak leaves and irises, painted and partially gilded. Copper closing pin and matching fan ring. Twisted silk cord with two tassels.
