About this work
In the central field, before a number of columns and under a canopy, stands Alexander the Great. He is surrounded by a number of women and servants and points to the burning palace complex in Persepolis, depicted on the left in the background. In the left foreground, a woman with her back to the viewer observes the scene. In the center of the foreground are a shield, crockery, a vase of flowers, and a monkey. The wide border is decorated with grapevines and finely worked fluttering birds in various colors.
