Snuffbox

Round box with flattened spherical shape and round lid with gilded silver hinge. The exterior is horizontally divided into two friezes, on which alternating cartouches and armorial trophies with cannons, flags, armor and drums. The cartouches contain in the lower zone a small representation of a sailing ship (under the hinge), a country house, a walled fortress at sea, and a landscape with houses; in the upper zone the cartouches are filled with identical garlands. Between each cartouche and trophy is always a shell motif with a hanging and a stylized hanging leaf motif placed. The underside bears a coat of arms with crest, representing a climbing lion with a diagonal bar through it on which three stars (family Nuyts?). The whole is placed in a wreath of shells and garlands.
