Ariadne and Bacchus

The rectangular box has beveled corners and a hinged lid with an overhanging rim. The rim is built up from bottom to top from a straight and a hollow section, separated by smooth profiles. The pattern is repeated at the bottom edge of the box in a simpler form. The side is decorated with eight recessed fields, of which the four smallest are decorated with masks and the large ones with playing children. The top of the lid shows in a recessed field a forest landscape with Bacchantes and Nymphs; a naked drunken woman is handed over to Bacchus by them. She is probably to be identified as Princess Ariadne, who became a goddess through her marriage to Bacchus.
