Linen damask tablecloth with the Battle of Malplaquet and equestrian portraits of Prince Eugene of Savoy and John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. Central field: the symmetrical pattern, tripled horizontally and doubled vertically, displays four scenes from bottom to top: 1 A hand-to-hand combat. 2 A fortified city with a separate citadel. 3 A rider on a rearing horse wearing a long wig. 4 Two coats of arms; the coat of arms of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough: oval and surrounded by the motto of the Order of the Garter (conferred in 1702): HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, and the whole before a double eagle with a crown (received in 1704 from the German Emperor); the coat of arms of Eugene of Savoy surrounded by the chain of the Annunziata(?). Standing and lying borders: armorial trophies.
