About this work
Mary stands with her left knee slightly forward. Her head is turned slightly to the side, towards the child, whom she carries on her right arm. The child is dressed in a long shirt and holds his arms forward. Mary wears a band in her hair, which flows out at the temples and falls over her shoulders. Over the pleated dress, which is cinched with a belt, she wears a wide mantle hanging to the ground. This is held together at the chest by an agrave, is draped to the left and gathered at her right side, revealing the tip of her left shoe.
